When a lifeguard sees a hazard during a busy event, safety hinges on stopping exposure to people right away. The fastest and most protective action is to evacuate the area and isolate the hazard. By moving patrons away from danger and creating a barrier so others can’t access the hazard, you immediately reduce the risk of injury and give yourself space to manage the situation. Once the area is secure, you can coordinate with maintenance or supervisors to fix the hazard and determine when it’s safe to reopen.

Other options don’t provide immediate protection: waiting to notify maintenance after the event leaves people at risk in the meantime, continuing to monitor from a distance doesn’t remove the danger, and ignoring the hazard is unsafe and unacceptable.
